Strictly Sad Media Crisis

20/11/2008

Another minor media crisis for the BBC as John Sergeant steps lightly out of Strictly Come Dancing with some of the most deft footwork yet seen in the competition.
The BBC should have put out a bold statement a couple of weeks ago making it clear that the programme was strictly entertainment and confirming their support for shambling amateurism. It might have provoked a couple of resignations from those estuarial-accented judges but, well, who's bothered about them?
The judges and the BBC may be looking for poise and professionalism, but we prefer our hoofers to be strictly chaotic. Our sequinned Eddie The Eagle brought wit, humour and enormous watchability to an otherwise drab little show. The sight of John dragging his delectable partner Kristina across the dance floor like the weekly washing will be the enduring image of 2008 TV.
The BBC has been seriously wrong-footed. If we had wanted penguin-suited precision we might as well have stayed with Come Dancing. I certainly won't be watching this week; but I will be writing a letter to the BBC recommending that John Sergeant be short-listed for Sports Personality of the Year.
