Political Correctness

06/01/2008

The personal presentation skills of our leading British politicians leave a lot to be desired. Compared with other A List politicians around the world - notice I don't say 'statesmen' or 'stateswomen' - they appear about as grey as John Major.

Gordon Brown's New Year portrait and vision for 2008 were delivered in the Thatcher Room at No 10. Solid.....and dull. Similar offerings have come from David Cameron and Nick Clegg (whose dissertation on ID cards was guaranteed to set the heart a-racing).

Meanwhile, over in the US mid-west, the Iowa caucuses produced about as much fizz as a Bonfire Night sparkler. This strange festival, the rules of which are as clearly understood as soccer's off-side rule, raised waving, smiling and sleeplessness almost to an art form. But at least their politicians SMILE even if the event itself is about as exciting at an Iowa corn cutting competition.

But if you're looking for a real new season photo opportunity, I'm backing France's President Nicolas Sarkozy. Let's set aside for a moment his rather déclassé appearance last week at Disney Paris with his new love, the delectable former supermodel Carla Bruni - an appearance guaranteed to produce a sneer from every Gitane-loving Frenchman. This week, M. Le Président and She of the Bare Midriff Tendency were sporting their designer shades in Petra.

Now, there's romantic! If you are going to be seen anywhere make sure it's Jordan's 'rose-red city half as old as time'.
